Free Sentence Counter

Count the sentences in any text instantly — along with words, characters, paragraphs and reading time. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Sentence counter

Why use this sentence counter?

Counts sentences properly

Abbreviations, decimals and ellipses do not each end a sentence. Segmentation follows Unicode rules rather than splitting on every period.

Works in any language

Chinese 。, Japanese !, Arabic ؟ and Hindi । are recognised as sentence endings, not ignored the way a period-only splitter ignores them.

Every other count too

Words, characters with and without spaces, paragraphs, reading time and speaking time — all updating as you type.

Nothing is uploaded

The counter runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server, so it is safe for confidential drafts.

How to use the sentence counter

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste into the box above — the count updates on every keystroke.

  2. Read the sentence count

The sentence total leads the statistics panel, with words, paragraphs and reading time beneath it.

  3. Adjust and re-check

Edit in place to hit a target sentence count for an abstract, summary or assignment.

About this sentence counter

A sentence counter sounds trivial until you try writing one. Splitting text on every period turns “Dr. Smith paid $1.50 at 3 p.m.” into four sentences, and it misses the ending punctuation of most of the world's writing systems entirely. This counter uses Unicode sentence segmentation instead, so abbreviations and decimals stay put and 。!?؟। are all recognised.

Sentence counts matter more often than you would expect: abstracts capped at a number of sentences, summary assignments, ad copy with a hard limit, readability work where you are trying to bring the average sentence length down. The count updates as you type, so you can edit toward the target rather than pasting and re-pasting.

Everything runs in your browser — your text is never uploaded — and the panel also gives you words, characters, paragraphs, reading time and speaking time. If you want the same numbers with the word count leading, use the word counter.
