About this reading time calculator
“A 6 min read” at the top of an article is a small promise, and readers notice when it is wrong. This free reading time calculator gives you the number from your actual text: paste it in and the estimate appears immediately, along with the word, sentence and paragraph counts behind it.
Two estimates are shown, because they are genuinely different problems. Silent reading runs around 230 words a minute in English; reading aloud runs closer to 140. A conference talk, a podcast script and a voiceover all need the speaking figure, and using the reading figure is how a fifteen-minute slot turns into twenty-five minutes.
The rate follows the page language rather than assuming English throughout, since a words-per-minute constant makes little sense for Chinese or Japanese text. Everything is computed in your browser — nothing is uploaded — so unpublished scripts and drafts stay private. To cut a long piece down toward a target time, the text summarizer is the faster route.
